How much storage do you really need? If you do need 12TB of storage, I would run 3x4TB drives in RAID0 and then decide what data you can afford to lose and which you can't. Anyone that needs parity protection with large arrays has moved to RAID6 which is just unnecessarily expensive for non mission critical data. They can take days to rebuild in the event of a drive failure and often fail in rebuilding. In addition these days, large RAID5 arrays of 10TB+ are incredibly risky. It doesn't sound to me that any of this stuff is mission critical to your business, so down time in the event of a drive failure is not important. it's only real benefit is reducing the down-time experienced in the event of a drive failure. I think consolidating and simplifying is a great idea, but RAID5 is not the answer. Having a card that OS X can boot to means nothing as I will be using a separate solution with SSD's for that. What I was wondering was, has anyone used this card or do they know of a better card in a similar price range that would do a good job. The card I was looking at with this - The Newer Technology MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G 1e1i, this is from OWC and seems to be mac compatible. Now from what I understand the best why going about it would be the get a card with Mini SAS so that I can still use the drive sleds. I don't want to run the WD Red drives off the internal ports because of the lack of Sata 6.0G ports. Now what I would like to do is replace the VelociRaptors with 4x WD Red 4TB's and put it in a Raid 5 config and run 2 Samsung 250GB 840 EVO's in a Syba Dual SSD caddy.

I apologize if that sounds like a rant in advance- I'm just a bit tired of people telling me what I should buy when my original question has nothing to do with seeking alternatives.Hello to all, I am wanting to upgrade the storage in my Mac Pro.Ĭurrently I run 4x WD VelociRaptors 160GB's in Raid 0 as my boot volume with a 2tb and 1tb in the optical drive bay. I simply want to know if the 2010 version resolves the issues with stability that the older generations seemed to have (since I've read about a lot of problems on the blue PCB RAID card, but not a single thing about the black PCB unit in a 2010 MP). I have my reasons for wanting the Apple card.

So, please, don't reply with "But you can get a Highpoint for cheaper!" or "That RAID card is slow, you could get XYZ for less anyways", or even "You don't need that, just use software RAID".

What I *DO* care about is having the RAID configuration utility (however crappy it may be) built into the OS, and not having to scramble around for RAID drivers and dealing with web-based user interfaces. I am also NOT concerned with the fact that other RAID cards *might* perform better then the official Apple unit. Cost is NOT an issue and I do NOT care that the card is 800$. I haven't read anything regarding the new cards, so I would assume they all work fine and run stable- but I'd just like to confirm this before I grab one for my 2010 MP.īecause I've posted this question elsewhere (and my original question remains unanswered)- I should probably clarify that I'm *not* looking to purchase a Highpoint card, or any other RAID card for that fact. I would like to know if these issues have generally been resolved with the iPass-less 2010 card (black PCB, not blue). I have a quick question regarding the Mac Pro 2010 compatible RAID Card (yes, the official unit from Apple).ĭoes this unit exhibit the same issues with stability that the previous generation had?Īs I recall, the previous iPass enabled cards seemed to have a lot of issues with array configurations and rebuilding degraded arrays.
